Cyber-Physical Security for Resilient Smart Communities

Smart Secure Urban System 4.0 – SmarT SENSE 4.0 is a Research and Development project aimed at creating a methodological and technological framework for the cyber-physical security of Smart Communities.

The project addresses cyber and physical threats affecting urban infrastructure, critical systems and digital ecosystems through an integrated approach. It adopts a human-centric perspective focused on the needs of citizens, institutions and organisations.

Launched in 2020, SmarT SENSE 4.0 is the result of a collaboration between N&C and leading organisations in the ICT sector. Its objective is to strengthen urban resilience and public trust in institutions through accessible, secure and interoperable technologies.

Main Objective of the Project

To design and develop a service platform providing tools and methodologies for the cyber-physical protection and resilience of urban systems, their critical assets and the people who interact with them.

The platform supports every stage of the protection lifecycle, from preparedness and prevention to threat detection and the coordinated response to emergencies and potential risks.

The project is co-funded by the European Regional Development Fund – Apulia Region ERDF Operational Programme 2014–2020, under the initiative “Investing in Your Future”:

N&C’s Architecture and Contribution

N&C played a key role in system hardening, contributing to the design of a robust, distributed and high-performance architecture based on the following elements:

  • real-time data processing;
  • an event-driven architecture based on the publish/subscribe model;
  • horizontal scalability, fault tolerance and low latency;
  • data security, data retention and secure communications.

The platform integrates open-source tools for traffic monitoring, intrusion prevention, secure VPN deployment and event correlation, ensuring service protection and secure access to data.

Project approach and vision

The project is based on the intelligent collection and analysis of urban and online data, in full compliance with privacy rules, to support the prevention, detection and mitigation of cyber and physical threats.

Intelligence is at the core of the platform, enabling proactive security management through advanced data analysis and early detection of anomalies.
